Edinburgh City Chambers is one of the most popular places to get married in Scotland and for good reason. Right on the Royal Mile, it’s perfect for couples planning an intimate city wedding, an elopement, or a relaxed registry office ceremony with iconic Edinburgh scenery right outside the door.
As Edinburgh wedding photographers, we’ve photographed many City Chambers weddings over the years. This guide is here to give you a clear idea of which rooms are available, what your timeline might look like, and how to get the best wedding photos on the day, without any unnecessary fluff.
Why Get Married at Edinburgh City Chambers?
City Chambers is ideal if you want:
- A central Edinburgh location
- A short, meaningful ceremony
- Flexibility around the rest of your day
- Easy access to Old Town photo locations
It’s especially popular for:
- Small weddings
- Elopements
- Legal ceremonies followed by a meal elsewhere
- Couples travelling to Scotland to get married
Ceremony Rooms at Edinburgh City Chambers
There are several ceremony rooms available at City Chambers. While we’ll explain all of them here for completeness, the most common room we photograph is the Alexander Suite, followed by The Wee Neuk for very small ceremonies.
The Alexander Suite (Most Popular)
The Alexander Suite is on the ground floor, just off the main entrance, and it’s the most commonly booked room (at least in our experience!).
- Capacity: up to 36 guests (standing)
- Ground-floor access (fully accessible)
- Ceremony room overlooks the quadrangle courtyard
- Separate waiting lounge for guests
- Small ante room where the registrar meets the couple before the ceremony
From a photography point of view, this room works really well:
- Good natural light
- Enough space to move quietly
- A relaxed, calm atmosphere
If you’re unsure which room to book, this is usually the safest and most flexible choice.
The European Suite
The European Suite is a more traditional, grand room on the first floor.
- Capacity: up to 70 guests (standing)
- Access via main staircase or lift
- Historic paintings lining the walls
- Overlooks the quadrangle courtyard
This room has a very regal feel and suits couples wanting a more formal setting. Even if you don’t choose this room, it’s good to know it exists as an option for larger guest numbers.
The Council Chamber
The Council Chamber is the largest ceremony room at City Chambers and sits on the seventh floor.
- Capacity: up to 110 guests (standing)
- Views across the Edinburgh skyline
- Domed ceiling, murals, and a striking fireplace
- Access via stairs or lift
This room feels very grand and works best for larger weddings. Edinburgh Registration Services encourage couples to personalise ceremonies here, which makes it popular for those wanting something more bespoke.
The Wee Neuk (Smallest Room)
The Wee Neuk is the smallest ceremony room and is perfect for couples who want something very simple.
- Monday to Thursday only
- For the couple and two witnesses (we can also be in there)
- Standard ceremony only
This room is often chosen by couples:
- Eloping to Edinburgh
- Having a legal ceremony before a larger celebration abroad
- Wanting a no-fuss, registration-only ceremony
It’s small, quiet, and very intimate — ideal if the legal part of the day is all you’re after.
A Typical City Chambers Wedding Timeline
One of the biggest questions couples ask is “How much time do we actually need?”
Here’s a realistic example for a City Chambers wedding with photography:
Example 2-Hour Timeline
15–20 minutes before ceremony
- Guests arrive and wait in the lounge
- Final paperwork and chats with the registrar
- A few relaxed pre-ceremony photos if time allows
Ceremony (15–20 minutes)
- Short, personal, and relaxed
- Key moments happen quickly, so experience matters here
Immediately after ceremony (10–15 minutes)
- Congratulations
- Confetti (where permitted)
- Quick group photos nearby
Couple portraits (20–30 minutes)
- Royal Mile
- Parliament Square
- Nearby Old Town closes
- St Giles’ Cathedral area
This leaves you plenty of time to head off to your restaurant, reception, or next location without feeling rushed.
