Venues

When it comes to finding a fairytale setting for your wedding day, Dundas Castle in Edinburgh is nothing short of magical. As a wedding photographer in Edinburgh, I’ve had the pleasure of working at many venues across Scotland, and Dundas Castle consistently stands out, not just for it’s breathtaking setting, but for the truly exceptional experience it offers to couples and their guests.

The Venue and Grounds

Dundas Castle is a 15th century fortress, set within a private estate. It’s one of those places where every direction you look it offers a picture perfect backdrop. Whether you’re planning a classic Scottish celebration or a more contemporary day, the setting adapts beautifully.

The grounds are vast and varied, offering everything from manicured lawns and ancient woodland to a serene loch and rolling countryside views. They also have a large luxury tent available, which they use for the evening reception, which offers a massive space for partying and with the lovely white ceilings, it’s great for us wedding photographers too, allowing us to bounce flash and get amazing photos!

Ceremony Spaces and Iconic Features

There are several spaces available for your ceremony, each with its own charm, but the castle’s grand staircase is a standout feature. With its sweeping banister and warm stone walls, it makes for an unforgettable entrance and creates a striking setting for your ceremony. From a photographer’s point of view, it’s a dream, both for capturing romantic top-down shots and beautifully framed moments as couples descend the stairs.

Weather permitting, couples can also take advantage of the rooftop. It’s not only a fun adventure during the quieter moments of the day, making your way up the winding stone stairs, but it also provides one of the most iconic photo opportunities in the whole of Scotland, a view stretching over the Firth of Forth, with the Forth Road Bridge in the distance and the Scottish Saltire flying proudly from the flagpole. It’s cinematic, bold, and uniquely Scottish.

A Venue Full of Character

One of the unexpected joys of Dundas Castle is its resident animals! On my most recent visit, the owner’s friendly dogs were roaming the grounds, and there was even a small herd of llamas out in one of the fields. It’s little touches like this that add a sense of personality to the venue, something playful and unique that guests always remember.

Staff and Coordination

The team at Dundas Castle are among the best I’ve encountered in the wedding world. From the first enquiry to the last dance, the staff are attentive, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in making the day run smoothly. Their wedding coordinators, in particular, deserve a shoutout, they are calm, proactive, and have a sixth sense for being in the right place at the right time.

As a photographer, this makes a huge difference. A supportive venue team can help shape the whole flow of the day and ensure that every detail is captured perfectly.

Food and Drink

The food at Dundas Castle is nothing short of incredible. Their catering team delivers beautifully presented dishes that are packed with flavour, not just your standard wedding fare, but something genuinely exciting. On our last visit we tried the prosciutto starter with the beef main course and it was absolutely delicious.

Guests often comment on how good the food is, which speaks volumes considering how often wedding meals blur into one. Here, it’s a highlight in itself.

Photography Opportunities

For a wedding photographer, Dundas Castle is an absolute playground. Whether it’s golden hour portraits in the fields, dramatic stairway shots inside the castle, or candid moments on the castle rooftop, the setting offers endless variety without ever needing to leave the grounds.

You’ve got wide open spaces for big family group shots, shaded woodland areas for intimate couple portraits, and architectural features that add drama and elegance to every frame. Even the indoor areas are beautifully lit and thoughtfully styled — perfect for winter weddings or wet weather days.

And of course, if you’re lucky enough to get a clear day, the views from the tower with the Forth Bridges in the distance are something truly special.

Some Things to Note

Confetti isn’t allowed at the castle, which is a shame, because we do love a good confetti throw, so keep that in mind if you were planning to do this. Bubbles could make a great alternative though.

Also if you want to fly a drone, then you will need permission ahead of time, so make sure to plan ahead and let your photographer know.

Final Thoughts

Dundas Castle is a venue that genuinely has it all. It blends old world grandeur with warm hospitality, luxurious details with wild Scottish charm. Whether you’re planning an elegant black-tie wedding or a relaxed, nature filled celebration, the team here will help bring your vision to life and as a photographer, I can honestly say it’s one of the most photogenic venues I’ve had the pleasure of working at.

If you’re considering Dundas Castle for your big day, you’ll be in very good hands and surrounded by beauty at every turn.
